Beachbody Performance Line

Is Beachbody’s Performance Line really needed for home fitness?

If you are new to fitness, it can be overwhelming when looking at supplements. You may have a hard time knowing what companies are reputable, what supplements are worth the price, what supplements are most beneficial for your needs, and what it safe. I have been skeptical of claims from various products myself; I always thought supplements were for elite athletes, professional athletes, professional body builders, etc. not for home fitness users.

Even when the Performance Line was released by Beachbody, I didn’t fully dig in and learn about it … until I started the NASM Personal Training program. The course forced me to learn about what happens to our muscles during and after exercise.  In this post I will briefly share about what happens to our muscles during exercise, take a look at what each supplement does, and share my husband’s and my experience with the products.

Muscle Performance During Exercise
In order for our bodies to perform during workouts, it needs fuel. We get that fuel from the food we eat, our main sources of energy (fuel) comes from carbohydrates, proteins, and fats. But in order for the body to use that energy, it goes through a chemical process to convert it and store it, called ATP (adenosine triphosphate). When the chemical bonds that hold ATP together are broken, energy is released and leaves behind another molecule called ADP (adenosine diphosphate). In order to perform more work, ADP must reattch to phosphate group in order to restore ATP levels. When all the ATP is depleted, there is no more energy to perform.

Depending on the duration and intensity during exercise, our body will use different systems to regenerate ATP to produce energy. The ATP-PC system provides energy for high-intensity, short duration exercise such as lifting heavy loads or short sprints (10-15 seconds). The glycolytic system (glycolysis) can produce significantly greater amounts of energy than the ATP-PC system, but it is limited to approximately 30-50 seconds of duration or about 8-12 repetitions. As the duration of exercise increases, the body relies on the oxidative system which uses fat and glucose (carbohydrates) to provide energy. Energy metabolism (converting food into fuel) is more complex than what was explained above. Having a very basic understanding will help you understand your energy needs for the fitness program you choose.

Energize
Is a pre-workout formula that can give you more energy and endurance, improve your performance, and delay exercise-induced muscle fatigue*.

Hydrate
Even mild dehydration can cause a dramatic reduction in performance. Typical sports drinks have too much sugar and artificial ingredients that can dehydrate you. And water alone doesn’t effectively hydrate during exercise or replace what you lost through sweat. Hydrate gives you an ideal balance of carbohydrates and electrolytes in an optimal concentration for better absorption*.

Recover
When beginning exercise or a new program, muscle soreness can be extremely intense until your body adapts. Recover takes advantage of the critical post-workout window to help combat exercise-induced muscle soreness, speed muscle recovery, support muscle growth, and improve strength recovery*.

Creatine
Creatine monohydrate is the most highly researched, scientifically proven supplement available. Creatine occurs naturally in our bodies and helps to supply energy to all cells in the body. When you push your muscles to their max, your energy stores become depleted (remember the info about what happens to our muscles during exercise). Supplementing consistently with creatine serves to increase your body’s creatine stores, thus giving you more energy to help you increase strength and power as well as improve high-intensity performance*.

Recharge
There is enough research out there showing getting a good night’s sleep aids in muscle recovery. In order for muscles to recover and repair you need protein. Protein must be broken down by the body into amino acids before the body can use them to build or repair tissue (or be used for energy). Branch Chain Amino Acids (BCAA) are three different forms of protein with similar structures and can be found in food, such as eggs and meat. Recharge is a nighttime recovery formula that is specially formulated with key ingredients to help accelerate recovery, combat exercise-induced muscle soreness, and promote new muscle growth while you sleep*.

Our Experience
With a better understanding of muscle performance during exercise and since I already get a discount on Beachbody’s programs and supplements, I decided I would give the Performance Line a try. I was doing Body Beast at the time and I was feeling sluggish before, during, and after my workouts. Even after stretching and foam rolling, I was still sore and stiff all the time. I also hit a plateau, strength-wise; I read a few online “claims” {remember, I was “new” to this whole building serious muscle thing and I’m a girl, so naturally getting “ripped” or “huge” meant getting man muscles…oh, how I’ve learned…} that creatine can help reduce muscle fatigue which can lead to strength gains. I’m sure most of my issues were related to lack of sleep (sleep is great for muscle recovery), but when you cannot count on getting consistent sleep or cannot nap as long a you want too, and you still have children to take care of, homework to do, some household stuff, etc., you are willing to try anything legal that will make you function until bedtime.

My husband uses Energize to help get him moving on the mornings child #4 preferred dad from the hours of 12-3am. I wake up dehydrated and tired so I mix a scoop of Hydrate and a scoop of Energize in my Shakeology cup and fill the cup with water (I prefer 1/2 scoop of Energize to 16oz of water) to drink before I drink anything else in the morning.

My husband uses Hydrate every day. He is a heavy construction and forestry equipment mechanic and most often works outdoors or is constantly moving. He also is on a diuretic for his high blood pressure. A diuretic removes water from the body, so he needs to drink more water than the average person and after awhile, he needs something other than water to drink. If he doesn’t drink enough fluids, he suffers through some major leg cramps. We used to buy the huge bottles of Gatorade, but that was getting expensive as he would go through a few bottles per day. After he started drinking the Hydrate he noticed he needed less Gatorade or Powerade per day and he eventually replaced those products with Hydrate. He also did not have intense cramps as often.

I add the Recover and Creatine to my Shakeology and drink it as a post workout meal since I’m usually hungry and ready to shove whatever I can find in my face while preparing a meal. FYI: Recover + Vegan Chocolate Shakeology + water is the creamiest, best chocolate shake ever. You’re Welcome. Recharge tastes like melted vanilla ice cream and it is delicious. More importantly, I did notice waking up less sore when I drank it consistently.

In the beginning of the post, I  posed the question, “Is Beachbody’s Performance Line really needed for home fitness”?

Displaying IMG_20160418_163115_663000.pngIf you can relate to my experience or you have lack of energy, continued exercise induced muscle soreness, lack of strength or stamina (within reason) and it is preventing you from exercising consistently, I think it’s worth looking into Beachbody’s Performance Line.

Beachbody’s Performance Line may also be beneficial to individuals:
– have an active lifestyle
– already exercising, but want to increase intensity but do not have the energy
– consistently working out five or more days per week
